Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.

Aviation Problems

The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.

Border Security Response

Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.

As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.

Contraband Recovery

At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.

International Illegal Trade

While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."

Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.

Neighboring Country Impact

Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.

Illegal Transport Methods

Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."

Security Service Goals

Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."

Regional Security Context

The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.

Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
