From Praise to Rage: Right-wing Reaction to Epstein File Release is Mixed.
Right-leaning reactions to the partial disclosure of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable appearance of former President Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others lamented how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Fervent Rhetoric
Administration representatives justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter outlining the censorship process.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and image appear in portions of the documents, the extensive redactions prompt significant questions about the information may be hidden beneath them. A number of Republicans swiftly called for increased openness.
“People are furious and walking away,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the statute, and implied that a future legislature may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this document release egregiously does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the law,” he added.
Some Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Release
But, a segment of rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities blacked out.
Yet a few do not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed certain conservative voices to launch the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Campaign Issues Response
Clinton has consistently stated he knew of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been hiding those documents for months only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement concluded.
Overall Rightwing Comment Remains Muted
Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for action that came before the legislative approval to pass a bill requiring the files' publication.
The commentator, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest advocates for a complete disclosure. In February, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative influencers were given physical folders of files that included no previously unseen data.
